This time of the year EVERYONE is talking about Fire Cider. How to use it, what it’s for and how to make it at home. I was introduced to Fire Cider a couple years ago by watching a Facebook Reel! So I decided to give it a try for me and my family. It sounded like something that would be easy to make and easy to take. Guess what! It was that easy!

Why use Fire Cider?

Why did I decide to give this a try? Well for one, I don’t like going to the doctor unless I absolutely can’t fix the problem at home. Yep! I’m one of those “herbal wives” as I’ve heard it called. I love making my own teas and tinctures that are known to help your body heal in one way or another. So fire cider is up there with boosting the immune system. Barbara O’Neill has always said, “If you give the body the right means, it will heal itself.” (@realbarbaraoneillvideos on YouTube) Now everything I am about to share is by no means the absolute of all known “out comes” and I’m no doctor myself. I will not diagnose you and offer a remedy. I will share what I have done for myself and my own family. You can give these a try but please, do your own research too. Just like I have done.

How to make Fire Cider.

Like I said before, I saw a Facebook Reel from a person I follow on Facebook and she is very entertaining and has published a book on Foraging. Her name is Whitney! She is the Appalachin Forager. Feel free to look her up. But she gave me the idea to “go forth and forage!” So I did! Most of the ingredients in my Fire Cider I grow myself or buy organic. Now I am not going to go into what each ingredient does. You have Google, you can look it up. I’m just here to share what I do.

My Recipe for Fire Cider:

  1. Jalapeno or cayenne peppers
  2. Lemons (sliced)-I use 2 lemons for a half gallon jar
  3. Oranges (sliced)
  4. Red onion (chopped)
  5. Thyme, fresh or dried
  6. Rosemary
  7. Oregano
  8. Cinnamon sticks,2
  9. Peppercorns, I used 10-15
  10. Whole cloves, I used about 2 tsp
  11. Chopped Turmeric Root, 2 fingers
  12. Chopped Ginger Root, 2 fingers
  13. Horseradish, depends on the size but roughly 2-3 fingers
  14. Garlic blub
  15. Apple Cider Vingear with the mother
  16. Parchment paper
  17. Glass jar-you can pick any size you want. I use a half gallon sized jar.
  18. Lid and ring for jar

I don’t have exact measurements as you can see. My horseradish is in it’s 3rd growing season and they are very skinny. However, the order that they are in above is how I start to fill my jar. Don’t over fill your jar with too many ingredients. I try to get atleast half of my jar with ACV to raw ingredients. So pack them loosely. Once you have all your ingredients in the jar, cover with ACV and add parchment paper under the lid and ring. The vinegar can rust your lid so that’s why I use the paper in between. Now we wait! You can leave it sit in a dark room and infuse for about a month. I’ve let mine go as far as 6 weeks.

Once the jar is ready, strain out the plant material into a bowl. I like to use mason jars to store my Fire Cider for up to a year in the fridge. I have seen others make a powder out of the used up plant material by dehyrating it but I’ve never tried that before. I’d love to see if any of you have tried it.

How to use it!

Okay so once your fire cider has sat for it’s infusion time and then strained out, now it’s time to taste it!! I add raw honey to my finished fire cider as I use it. I’ll take 1 cup fire cider to 1 cup honey in a pint jar and shake it up! Then we just take about 1 tablespoon or a shot glass full 2-3 times a day when we feel a cold or flu coming on. You can also add it to hot tea for those that don’t like the taste. I have found that this will shorten the time it takes for a virus to run it’s course. However, if you do have a fever that won’t go away after 2-3 days, then it may be bacterial and need a doctor. So make those decisions for you and your family as needed.

So that’s it!! Easy, right? I find that the most difficult parts of making fire cider is finding all my ingredients I want to put in my jar and waiting for it to be done!! LOL!

Now are you going to make Fire Cider for you and your family? Let me know!
